Vodka helps stranded elephants survive in Russia: RIA

MOSCOW (Reuters) – Two circus elephants drank vodka to help them survive when their trailer caught fire in freezing Siberia, RIA news agency said. A quick-thinking handler resorted to the traditional Russian cure for all ills by buying two cases of vodka from a nearby village, diluting it with warm water and serving it to Indian elephants Jenny and Magda, it said. He had become desperate after realizing that making them run round the broken truck was not enough to prevent them freezing to death before a new trailer arrived to complete their journey. …

Baby's first pet may protect against allergies

While evidence has been conflicting, there does not seem to be a strong reason to keep a pet out of the home because of allergy concerns.Rover and Fluffy are unlikely to raise kids’ risk of developing pet allergies, and could lower them, according to a new 18-year-long study.

Dealing with Pet Diabetes – the Exercise Connection

A few days ago, I wrote about Cali’s health challenges as a result of feline diabetes and kidney disease. I touched on the importance of feline enrichment to keep cats both mentally and physically in shape. Our good friend, Dr. Rod Van Horn, also shared some great insights about making sure pets are living healthy lives. Here are some additional tips to help make that happen.

Among other issues, diabetes brings on a weakness in the back legs, which means that not only does an obese cat have difficulty walking because of the excess pounds, but the problem is exacerbated by the fact that their legs are weak and thus they struggle even more to move.

  • The simplest way to get a cat to exercise is to carry her to the furthest point in the house from the food bowl. You are guaranteed she will get there! And, if you do that several times a day, you can in fact call it an exercise routine!
  • The other easy way to introduce exercise is with fun and games – chasing a laser beam or playing with a wand toy are great forms of exercise. If you do short bouts several times a day, you are helping to burn calories and get muscles moving.
  • These days there are a variety of wonderful treadmills for dogs. These are great when the weather is bad preventing regularly outdoor exercise. They are also excellent for elderly dog owners who, themselves, have difficulty walking great distances.

Lately,  pet treadmills are also being used to help slim down obese dogs, like Rocky, a really overweight Dachshund who has slimmed down drastically since he has been using the Dogpacer treadmill. Rocky’s former owner was feeding him hamburgers and the poor dog simply couldn’t move. He has slimmed down drastically. He is now in the care of a pet shelter who, in addition to helping him regain his health, is also looking for his forever family.

Of course, cats won’t use a treadmill. But there is a specially designed exercise wheels for felines, which I first saw at a cat show. It looks a bit like a Ferris wheel and I guess if you can purr-suade a feline to give it a try, it would be a great way of also increasing daily exercise.

Recently, I was speaking to a veterinarian and we were discussing some of the medical issues that our pets face today like diabetes and obesity. Many of these diseases we have foisted on our furkids through lack of exercise and general enrichment and a bad diet. It’s time to break the habit and give them back their health!

Ask the Trainer: Building trust and respect with your dog
Just as we are individuals, so are our dogs and we must ensure that our children are aware of this, i.e. every dog they meet may not react the same as the dogs they have encountered within friends' and families' homes and, of course, every animal has …

Day 192 – West Midlands Police – Police sniffer dog training

This photo shows West Midlands Police sniffer dog Honey who’s been training at the Wolves ground in preparation for his Olympic assignments.

West Midlands Police has around 20 specialist explosives sniffer dogs that will be deployed during the Games at venues including the Olympic village in London, to ensure the safety of both participants and spectators.

Honey is one of four who’ll be tasked with security checks before football matches being staged at the Ricoh Arena in Coventry.

To hone her stadium search skills, the three-year-old Spaniel has been using Molineux as a test-drill practice ground.

Dog Training Instructor PC Wayne Mellings, said: “Clearly with the Olympics now around the corner we must ensure we’re prepared for any eventuality; over the last six months we’ve been training at high-profile venues to make sure our dogs are familiar with searching stadium environments.

“Wolverhampton Wanderers is a superb venue for us to utilise as a training area for our police search dog capability. We are continually looking for opportunities to engage with local organisations, such as Wolves FC, and strengthen the already excellent relationships that exist.”

Matt Grayson, Head of Marketing & Communications at Wolves, said: “We have a great relationship with West Midlands Police and work closely with them both through our community work and on a match-day.

“Allowing them to use Molineux as a testing ground is just a natural extension of our association with them, so we were more than happy to help.”

The City of Coventry Stadium will host 12 Olympic football matches in total – seven women’s matches and five men – starting on 25 July with Japan’s ladies taking on their Canadian counterparts. Men’s teams from nations such as Japan, Sweden, Mexico and Switzerland will also play matches in Coventry.

PC Mellings, added: “Although the training is predominantly based around searching for potential explosive devices, the dogs are also trained to search for narcotics and thus promote venues as drug-free zones.

“The dog unit is always looking for new venues to expand its training options, further develop our dogs and help maximise their potential.”
